Markets don't test your models first. They test your stomach. This week I sat through another session where the tape moved hard in one direction, then reversed just as violently. Clients called. Some wanted to add, some wanted to cut, most just wanted certainty. I couldn't give them certainty. What I could give them was a framework. Here's the reality in Frankfurt and across global markets right now: the macro backdrop is noisy, liquidity is thinner than the headlines suggest, and volatility is not an anomaly—it's a feature. The question isn't whether your portfolio will be tested. It's whether your position sizing and your discipline will hold when it is. Three things I keep coming back to when markets feel like they're moving faster than fundamentals: 1. Position sizing is the only true risk control You can have the best macro view on the street, but if the position is too large, the view doesn't matter. Sizing is where conviction meets humility. I've seen more portfolios damaged by overconfidence in a single trade than by being wrong on the thesis. Right thesis, wrong size—still a loss. Wrong thesis, right size—you live to fight another day. 2. Liquidity is a privilege, not a given In calm markets, everyone feels liquid. In stress, the exit door narrows. I remind my clients that liquidity is not about the bid on your screen today; it's about whether you can transact at a fair price when you need to, not when you want to. That means avoiding crowded trades, keeping some dry powder, and respecting that in a drawdown, the market doesn't owe you a bid. 3. Volatility is information, not noise It's easy to dismiss a sharp move as 'just volatility.' But volatility often carries a message about positioning, leverage, or a hidden stress. The rational approach is not to react to every wiggle, but to ask: what is this move telling me about the consensus? Is the market more fragile than the narrative suggests? Sometimes the best trade is to do nothing—and let the market reveal its hand. Staying rational while the tape moves The hardest part of this business is not the analysis. It's the emotional discipline to stick to your process when your P&L is red and your phone is ringing. I've learned to separate the signal from the noise by having a pre-committed plan: what would make me wrong, and what will I do if that happens? If you can't answer that in one sentence, you're not ready to trade. For the affluent investors I work with in Frankfurt, the goal is not to predict the next move. It's to build a portfolio that can absorb the unexpected and still compound over time. That means diversification across truly uncorrelated strategies, a clear understanding of your own risk tolerance, and a partner who tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. If you're managing wealth in this environment, the most valuable asset you have is not your alpha—it's your discipline. Protect it.
